Looking for the right home is hard, to be sure. Especially when there are currently almost 700 homes for sale within a 10 mile radius of downtown Grand Rapids. How do you ever start??
Once you decide to start the process of buying a house, there are 2 good ways to begin. First, talk to a mortgage lender. Start asking questions about different loan programs and what you may qualify for. When you get to the point where you want to buy in the next 90 days, get pre-approved (read this article on pre-approvals). Step two is to determine the general area you’re interested in. Open Google maps and find your work, significant other, school, parents home, siblings homes, church, gym, etc. Then figure out how close or far away you want to be!
After you’ve completed the two starter steps, let’s look at houses! Often times this is the only way to really figure out what you like and don’t like. You might dream of a large, sprawling estate, but maybe after you visit one you’ll decide it’s too much to clean and maintain. Contact me and I can get you through almost any home for sale. We can start with 1 or 2 in a given area, and go from there.
Some questions to ask yourself: How long will I live in this home? Will my family size be increasing? Do I mind taking care of a big yard? Am I looking to make as much money as I can when I sell? Do I want to fix up a house? Do I know people who can help me fix up a house? Will I be entertaining lots of guests? Do I want to update a home based on my preferences, or do I want a home that’s 100% up to date. Is there a style of home that really attracts me? Do I prefer character or nondescript? How soon do I need to move in? Do I have specific preferences for every detail of my home?
Answering these questions can help establish your priorities. You might not get the “perfect home,” but experience shows that when you find a home you like and meets your needs, you’ll have a great sense of contentment and excitement once you can make it your own.
